Israeli soldier lightly injured during West Bank military operation

An Israeli soldier was lightly wounded by Palestinian gunfire during a military operation overnight Wednesday-Thursday in the West Bank village of Burqin, west of Jenin, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said.

The soldier sustained a hand injury and was taken to hospital for treatment. A number of suspects were arrested following the incident and the operation resumed, the military announced in a tweet early Thursday.

Early Wednesday, the IDF said troops arrested 14 wanted Palestinians and seized several weapons following extensive operations throughout the West Bank. The IDF said no soldiers were hurt during the raids.

The military said that troops seized three M16 rifles, a handgun, ammunition, and other military equipment during a raid in Burqin and arrested two suspects. In the adjacent Jenin refugee camp, another Palestinian suspected of terror activities was arrested, the IDF said.

Troops also operated in the Ramallah area and Nablus in Wednesday’s raids.

Israeli security forces have stepped up their operations in the West Bank following a deadly wave of terror attacks that left 19 people dead between mid-March and the beginning of May.

Many of the raids have concentrated on the unstable Jenin area, from where several of the attackers hailed.

The 14 suspects arrested Wednesday were taken to be questioned by the Shin Bet security agency.
